Galatians 5:22-26 (NET) 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love: joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24Now those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25If we live by the Spirit, let us also behave in accordance with the Spirit. 26Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, being jealous of one another.
1 Corinthians 13:4-6 (NET) 4Love is patient, love is kind, it is not envious. Love does not brag, it is not puffed up. 5It is not rude, it is not self-serving, it is not easily angered or resentful. 6It is not glad about injustice, but rejoices in the truth.
Ephesians 4:32 (NET) Instead, be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you.
A kind spirit is a gentle spirit. A kind spirit is a friendly spirit. A kind spirit is a sympathetic spirit. And by spirit, I am referring to the nature of a person. When our nature is one of kindness; we are gentle, friendly, and sympathetic towards others. No, that does not mean we are a pushover or that we condone or tolerate evil or wrongdoing. But it means we approach with an attitude that is not easily angered or resentful. It means we approach with an attitude of forgiveness. It means we are compassionate.
In our world today; the character, nature, quality, and spirit of kindness is rapidly becoming an endangered species. Our expression of kindness, especially toward those who are unkind, is a means of demonstrating the love of Christ to a world in desperate need of a Savior.
Gracious Heavenly Father,
The fruit of the Spirit in the Christian life is love, and that includes kindness. We love others, but we are not always kind, and for this we ask forgiveness. Remind us that our expression of kindness is a way we can show the love of Christ to others.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
