Galatians 5:22-26 (NET) 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love: joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24Now those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25If we live by the Spirit, let us also behave in accordance with the Spirit. 26Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, being jealous of one another.
When I first consider the word patience as it relates to God’s Word, I think of God’s patience with his first covenant people—the Israelites. Throughout the chapters in Exodus as I read the account of how God rescued the Israelites from their captivity in Egypt, I am astounded with how frequently those people grumbled, complained, shut down and utterly rebelled. And yet God continued to rescue them, provide for them, lead them and guide them throughout their journey. That’s definitely a prime example of patience borne out of love.
The second thing that comes to my mind is God’s patience with us. Our Heavenly Father’s promise given among the final exhortations in Hebrews 13, specifically vs. 5, “for he has said, ‘I will never leave you and I will never abandon you.’” displays enormous patience of God for his people.
Finally, God’s patience is the reason for the delay in Christ’s Return. Whenever I am tempted to wish for Christ to “come again, soon” I remember the reason for God’s patience.
2 Peter 3:9 (NET) The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some regard slowness, but is being patient toward you, because he does not wish for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
When I consider that the Bible is first and foremost a book about God; when I consider the depth of God’s patience with his people; I realize the need for a new depth of patience in my own life. God’s patience with his people both then and now demonstrates a depth of love that is difficult for our human minds to comprehend. How can I fail to respond? My impatience with others will never convey a sense of love of Christ through me. Yet I can show God’s love, in part, simply by being patient with others.
Gracious Heavenly Father,
How can I ever thank you for your patience with me? Words seem woefully inadequate. Please forgive me. As I gain a clearer understanding of your patience and the depth of love it demonstrates, guide me in being patient with myself, and with others.
