All Scripture

1 Thessalonians 2:12-13 (NLT)        We pleaded with you, encouraged you, and urged you to live your lives in a way that God would consider worthy. For he called you to share in his Kingdom and glory. Therefore, we never stop thanking God that when you received his message from us, you didn’t think of our words as mere human ideas. You accepted what we said as the very word of God—which, of course, it is. And this word continues to work in you who believe.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NLT)     All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

It has been said in many ways and different formats...

The Bible that is falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.

Adding a bit of humor to your day, I’ll also give you a phrase I learned in my teenage years at Camp Suwannee...

The Bible is the Bread of Life, not cake for special occasions.

Outside of prayer, the Bible is the most important tool we have in our toolbox for living a life pleasing to our Heavenly Father. The  caution is that the Bible must be taken and accepted as a whole. The temptation is to build upon the foundation of preferred verses while deleting unwanted verses from our Bibles. Some accept only Old Testament passages. Some accept only New Testament passages. However the Bible must be taken in its entirety understanding that the canonized Scriptures are a compellation of 66 books written over a span of 1,500+ years with more than 33+ authors, including a wide variety of literary styles. Yet it is God’s inspired Word written for us and no part is to be added on or improved to suit our liking, nor is any part to be deleted to suit our personal comfort zones. My last caution would be to seek out an authentic translation which holds fast to the true meaning of the original text and avoid paraphrases which simply teach you what someone else thinks.

And with this, I will leave you with one final quote from one of my favorite devotional writers...

The Bible dusted and displayed changes nothing. The Bible studied and obeyed changes everything. --Joe Barnett, Today’s Walk in the Word, Pathway, Inc.

Gracious Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the privilege of communicating both to you through prayer and from you through diligent study of Your Word. Forgive us for allowing our busy human-generated schedules to interfere or take priority over communication with you. Thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit who dwells within us and guides our understanding. Grant us the knowledge and wisdom you trust us to handle properly and correctly.

                                                                        In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
