Interesting Adjectives

1 Timothy 6:6-16  6But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 11But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 12Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you  14to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.

Adjectives are describing words often used to bring writing to life in the mind of the reader.  Adjectives help us make personal connections to the text. When reading Paul’s letter to Timothy, we catch a glimpse of those personal connections.

Contentment can bring great gain to our lives (v. 6).  Fighting the good fight of faith, can help us take hold of eternal life through our good confession in Christ (v. 12).  Perhaps the best personal connection is to know we are truly blessed when we rest in the assurance that our Lord Jesus Christ will certainly return in accordance with God’s own timing (v. 15).  I challenge you to take a moment to read this passage again, making connections with the text as you notice all those wonderful descriptive words.

Gracious Heavenly Father, our LORD God Almighty,

Thank you for the provision of your Word. Thank you for inspiring its authors to make your Word come alive in our lives today. Thank you for the promised Blessed Hope of the soon return of your Son and our Savior, to take place in your own time. May we be faithfully engaged in service for you until that moment.

In the Name of Jesus Christ, our LORD and Savior, Amen.
