Genesis 1:14-19 14And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.
Because my dad died when I was young, I have few memories, but the ones I do have are precious to me. One of my favorites is looking at the stars with him. We would race each other to find the Pleiades (the Seven Sisters). I would laugh and say, “There’s the Big Dipper, there’s the Little Dipper, and there’s the Baby Dipper, too!” Our purpose was singular—to admire a glimpse of God’s fourth day of creation. Together, Dad and I would sing the JW Peterson hymn, “It Took a Miracle.”
My Father is omnipotent and that you can’t deny; a God of might and miracles; ‘tis written in the sky. It took a miracle to put the stars in place; it took a miracle to hang the world in space. But when He saved my soul, cleansed and made me whole, it took a miracle of love and grace.
Some 50-60 years have passed since those childhood days when I shared the night skies with my Dad, but I still look for the Baby Dipper—and I still sing!
Gracious Heavenly Father, our LORD God Almighty,
Thank you for the beauty of your night skies. Thank you for the miracle of Your love and grace!
In the Name of Jesus Christ, our LORD and Savior, Amen.
