Be with My Heart

Proverbs 4:23 (NIV) 23Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Proverbs 6:20-21a (NIV) 21My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. 21aBind them always on your heart...

Proverbs 17:22a (NIV) 22aA cheerful heart is good medicine...

Proverbs 27:19 (NIV) 19As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart.

Jeremiah 17:9-10 (NIV) 9The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 10“I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”

Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV) 23Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Psalm 51:10, 17 (NIV) 10Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. ... 17My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.

The Bible is first and foremost a book about God. God’s heart is pure. God’s heart is clean. God’s heart never waivers. God’s heart yearns for his people. In fact, God so loved the people he created that he sacrificed his only begotten Son to save the people God so loved (c.f., John 3:16).

We have an expression... ‘get to the heart of the matter’ which means get down to the root of the topic. Why? Because the heart is the very center, the very foundation. And so it is with our daily lives. The things we carry in our hearts are those things most dear, most special, most important to us – the things we treasure. Is that where God resides? Do we treasure him the most of all those things in our heart? If we do; then our life reflects the God we love and treasure.

Lord God Almighty, my Heavenly Father;

I carry many things in my heart, but some things I need to yield to you. I bring you my broken and contrite heart, and ask that you create within me a pure heart – one that treasures and values You above all else. Help me to reorganize my priorities.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
