Proverbs 4:14-15 (NIV) 14Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers. 15Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way.
Proverbs 4:26-27 (NIV) 26Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. 27Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.
Psalm 37:23-24 (NIV) 23The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; 24though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.
I have no personal experience with counseling or rehabilitation services; but I know from the experiences of more than one friend that a major component of rehabilitation is to vary your routine pathways. For example, if a certain bar or pub was your favorite stop, choose a different road that does not drive past it. Find a different route from work back home to avoid temptation of old routines. For many people, this method works to help avoid temptations.
This advice isn’t new, it can be found in Scripture! Don’t follow the path of those who would lead you away from your Christian ethics – who would lead you away from what you know is the right thing. Remain steadfast. And when you stumble, as we all do in life, remember that it is the LORD who holds your hand.
Lord God Almighty, my Heavenly Father;
Be with my feet and the paths I take. Keep my feet steadfast on the path that pleases you. Help me avoid those things that would tempt me to drift away.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
