Consistency and Faithfulness

The Story: Chapter 6              The Bible: Numbers 1-36

            The Book of Numbers is a book of census and history. Although I suspect there are few who take time to read some of the more statistical books of the Old Testament (e.g., Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) there are hidden treasures throughout these pages. It is the story of God establishing his people; his wrath for disobedience and the ensuing consequences; his blessings and promise of his presence for those who remain faithful.

            The first portion of Numbers speaks to its title as a census numbers the clans, families, and every man by name. All men 20 years old or more were counted; the total being 603,550 (v. 46). Tragically, this is also the list of names who will perish in the desert wilderness during the 40 years of wandering, all the consequence of disobedience. So the first lesson we learn is that when God Almighty calls his people to be a faithful people, He means what he says and He will not tolerate disobedience. God will always be consistent in saying what He means and meaning what he says.

            As Balaam will later prophesy to the curse-seeking Balak;

Numbers 23:19  God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a human being, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not make it happen?

            Another recurring theme throughout The Book of Numbers is the reminder of the blessings for those who remain faithful. It is where we find the Priestly Blessing which is used to this day.

Numbers 6:24-26  “The LORD bless you and protect you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.”

            The Book of Numbers teaches Christians today many important lessons; among them that God is always consistent, and God is always faithful.

Today’s Prayer Suggestion:  Thank your Heavenly Father for his faithfulness in your life. Thank him that you can rely on his consistency.
