The Story: Chapter 5 The Bible: Exodus 33-34, 40; Leviticus 1-27
Exodus 39:42 The Israelites did all the work according to all that the LORD had commanded Moses. Moses inspected all the work, and they had done it just as the LORD had commanded—they had done it exactly—and Moses blessed them.
Beginning in the Garden of Eden with the creation of mankind, God clearly demonstrated his desire to have fellowship with his creation. With time and the passing of many generations the LORD once again makes it plain that he desires a people who will choose to be different and set apart from other nations; a people who will be His and a people whose desire will be to serve Him only; a people who will reveal Him to a world who knows him not.
The LORD provides through Moses all the details necessary for how fellowship with Him can and will take place. The last chapters of Exodus describe all the necessary items for worship and living as a holy nation set apart from other nations. Skilled workers, craftsmen, and laborers complete the work required. Now the daily work begins.
The entire book of Leviticus gives explicit instructions for how the Israelites are to conduct themselves. Included in the instructions are frequent notations for the consequences of obedience and the consequences of disobedience.
Leviticus 26:12-13 and 27:34 I will walk among you, and I will be your God and you will be my people. I am the LORD your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, from being their slaves, and I broke the bars of your yoke and caused you to walk upright. … These are the commandments which the LORD commanded Moses to tell the Israelites at Mount Sinai.
Through salvation in Christ, modern day Christians are still called to be a people set apart from other nations—from the desires of the world. God still desires fellowship with his people and has provided us with the Holy Spirit who dwells within us and the promise of direct fellowship with him in his future kingdom, the new heavens and new earth. We are still called to be a light that reveals Christ to those who do not know him. Now the work begins!
Today’s Prayer Suggestion: Thank your Heavenly Father that he desires fellowship with us. Ask how we may be useful to Him. Ask for strength to be His faithful workers.
