The Story: Chapter 6 The Bible: Deuteronomy 1-34
The Book of Deuteronomy largely consists of Moses turning over his leadership to become the responsibility of Joshua, in addition, it is the sermons of Moses to remind the people of what God expects from them. We must remember that by this time generations have died in the wilderness wanderings and it is a new generation who will move forward with Joshua into the Promised Land. Moses reviews the history of the Israelite Nation with them, he reminds them of the Laws and Covenants which must be followed including the consequences for disobedience and the blessings of faithfulness. Then Moses gives his final farewells.
Perhaps what stands out to me the most is how many reminders these people have been given that God is the One True God, that all idolatry must cease, that God’s people are to love him with all their being (e.g., mind, whole being, strength). And yet, here we are today needing the same reminders.
Deuteronomy 6:4-5 The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! You must love the LORD your God with your whole mind, your whole being, and all your strength.
Furthermore, the Israelites were charged with the responsibility of teaching future generations about the LORD God Almighty—and so are we.
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 These words I am commanding you today must be kept in mind, and you must teach them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road, as you lie down, and as you get up.
Today’s Prayer Suggestion: Consider the areas of your life that give God less than your whole self. Ask forgiveness and the courage to yield to him any areas in which you are lacking. Finally, ask for opportunities to share God’s consistency and faithfulness with young ones in your family.
