Trust His Timing

The Story: Chapter 4              The Bible:  Exodus 10-17

Exodus 14:13-14  Moses said to the people, “Do not fear! Stand firm and see the salvation of the LORD that he will provide for you today; for the Egyptians that you see today you will never, ever see again. The LORD will fight for you and you can be still.”

Time and again we see this same theme run throughout God’s Word. First the immediate command do not fear which carries with it the forceful meaning to stop fearing immediately. The next command, stand firm, again carrying a forceful meaning to station yourself firmly without fleeing. These commands are given to Abraham, Moses, Gideon, Joshua, Mary, as well as through the writings of David, Solomon, Paul. So many times we are told not to fear and to stand firm. And yet this is something Christians need to hear even to this very generation.

There is also a promise connected with the command. It is the promise of hope for those who will trust in the LORD God Almighty; He who will provide. Notice the phrases: see the salvation of the LORD; he will provide for you; the LORD will fight for you. We serve a God in whom we can trust that He will do what He says He will do. We only need to trust His timing and not our own.

There are negative examples throughout the scriptures as well. Sarah, Rebekah, Saul, and even David are examples of those who faced consequences after their impatience and acting on their own. Sadly, as we reflect on our own lives, we too often face consequences of our impatience and wanting to do things on our own; to take matters into our own hands.

Dear readers, I seriously considered providing a lengthy list of scriptural references for both positive and negative examples. However, my heart tells me that would be the easy way out. Instead I have chosen to  provide you with a few names and offer the challenge for you to notice them as you read through the Bible in The Story. Perhaps this is an opportunity for you to dig a little deeper.

Today’s Prayer Challenge:  Reflect on the times you have borne the consequences of acting with impatience. Ask forgiveness, for God is always merciful and compassionate. Then ask for the LORD’s guidance in trusting His timing for whatever concerns you now face.
