Times of
Refreshing
Acts 3:19-21
(NIV)
Repent, then,
and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing
may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed
for you—even Jesus. He must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to
restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.
Like many others I am guilty of bemoaning
the dry drought-like conditions of our state (New Mexico). However, it is not
always dry. Even the slightest shower can refresh our land and turn the brown
vegetation into hues of green. We may have sweltering heat during the day, but
mornings and evenings are often blessed with cool breezes—truly refreshing! It
helps me understand passages like today’s text.
Our hearts may seem dreary and dry
with the cares and concerns of the world. And believe me, it’s all but
impossible to feel any kind of refreshing as long as we are hauling a load of
worry with us everywhere we go. But when we yield our hearts to God, seek
forgiveness in all areas of our life, then will come the true times of
refreshing. We no longer stress and worry because we know we are in God’s care.
Not only this, but he has provided his Holy Spirit to comfort us while we wait
for the Second Advent of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We are not alone.
We are not abandoned. In our part of the country we rely on the cool refreshing
breezes of early morning and late evenings to bring comfort from the distressing
heat of the day. So too, can God’s forgiveness and the comfort of his Spirit
refresh our hearts from the cares, concerns, and worries of each day.
