Dorcas

Acts 9:36 (NLT) She was always doing kind things for others and helping the poor.

The story of Dorcas restored to life can be found in Acts 9:32-42 and I would encourage you to take a moment to read the entire story. According to what we read, Dorcas, her Greek name, (a.k.a., Tabitha in Aramaic) must have enjoyed sewing. Several versions of the story list various articles of clothing (e.g., tunics, cloaks, garments) that neighbors proudly displayed for Peter and the disciples to see. The work and generosity of Dorcas was well-known. In the final verse of this story we find the most likely reason this beloved woman was restored to life.

Acts 9:42 (NLT) The news spread through the whole town [Joppa], and many believed in the Lord.

The notation of the town name was added by me to illustrate another point. Do you remember the town of Joppa from yesterday’s devotional about Jonah? Yes, Joppa was a major coastal seaport. For news to spread throughout the town of Joppa, and for many to believe in the Lord as a result of this miracle, meant that news would continue to spread throughout other lands as well. Most certainly folk traveling from port to port would also know and retell the news of this miracle during their travels. Many more people would believe in the Lord. Again, science would label this the ripple effect. It’s how the gospel was spread—from person to person—from town to town. And in this particular case, it began with one woman’s simple acts of kindness, using whatever ability she had to help others.

Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)  Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 (NIV) Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might…

Galatians 6:9-10 (NIV) Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Philippians 2:13-14 (NLT) For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Do everything without complaining…

Colossians 3:23 (NLT)  Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.

Gracious Heavenly Father,

You know how discouraged we can become in this world full of negativity and self-centeredness. Yet you have given each of us something to do—a task, an ability, or talent, or skill. And as Christians you have given us the instruction to work diligently and help others along the way. Thank you for the example of Dorcas, who faithfully used her ability in a way that ultimately led others to believe in you. May we be found faithful in your sight.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
