With Thankful Hearts for God's Creation

1 Chronicles 16:31-33 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, “The LORD reigns!” Let the sea resound, and all that is in it; let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them! Let the trees of the forest sing, let them sing for joy before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth.

Job 11:7-9 Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty? They are higher than the heavens above—what can you know? Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea.

Job 12:7-10 But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.

During their migratory path we have a flock of turkey vultures who nest in the tall trees around our community. Sometimes there are relatively few, a dozen or so, but often there are more than one or two hundred. That’s quite a sight to see. When storms approach, the birds take to the air as high as they can go and circle their way back down to the trees, drifting on the incoming winds of the storm just ahead of the rains. They always seem to know.

In December 2004 a devastating tsunami reached Indonesian shores. As the water receded, many people lost their lives being drawn to the beaches to watch the curious phenomenon of receding waters…while others quickly fled to the higher ground because mysteriously that is where all the animals were headed. Indonesia estimated the loss of life at nearly 200,000. Most of those who survived fled to higher ground or inland with the animals and did not wait to see the catastrophic event unfold.

For years science has been studying communication between plants. It seems chemicals can be emitted from root system to root system to alert of potential dangers. Who knew plants could “talk”? Yet most of us enjoy the breeze that “sings” in the trees along hiking trails. While we often generally enjoy the scents of most flowers, were you aware that the scent emitted from flowers is designed to attract desirable pollinators and repel undesirable pollinators? Floral scents are another means of plant communication.

God’s creation is far more intricate than human minds can fathom. How often do we pause long enough to see the beauty of his creation? How often do we catch a glimpse of its hidden mysteries? More importantly, how often do we take time to thank the LORD for the joy of his creation?

Psalm 92:4-5 For you make me glad by your deeds, LORD; I sing for joy at what your hands have done. How great are your works, LORD, how profound your thoughts!

1 Chronicles 16:34 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.

Gracious Heavenly Father,

Thank you for both the tiny intricacies and the magnificent grandeur of your creation. Thank you for your wonderful works. Every day your creation teaches us additional reasons to praise you for all you have done. With thankful hearts we praise you, our God and Creator.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
