Stand Firm in Your Faith

Isaiah 7:9  If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.

The Book of Isaiah is one of prophecy and judgment. But it is also the message of hope for those who repent and look toward the coming day of redemption. Today’s verse is part of Isaiah’s message to King Ahaz, but I think it is appropriate for us as well.

There are many things in this current world culture that would draw us away from our devotion to God. We have a tendency to compromise with today’s world because, after all, “times are different now.” Indeed, times have changed, but God’s word stands secure. His word does not change.

Isaiah 40:8  The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.

Luke 21:33  Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

Perhaps one of the most difficult things for us as Christians is to stand firm in what we know to be true. God is truth; God’s word is truth. The litmus test for us as Christians is simple: Does it hold true to God’s Word? If so, then we are headed in the right direction. If in any way, what we hear is contrary to God’s word, challenges God’s word, modifies God’s word, or even tries to settle in compromise with God’s word; then it is not truth, nor should we follow after it. So the message for us today is to take heart—stand firm in your faith—and we draw strength from the example of the little church in Philadelphia:

Revelation 3:8  I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.

Gracious Heavenly Father,

You know the culture in which we live would draw us away from you. Yet we are here for a reason, to stand firm and share your truth with a world in desperate need of a Savior. Strengthen us in faith and love. Forgive us when we listen to contemporary voices of compromise. Even when our strength seems small, help us stand true to your word.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
