Trustworthy People

Psalm 12:16, 18, 22  Fools show their annoyance at once, but the prudent overlook an insult. … The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. … The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.

It isn’t hard to find evidence of how emotionally fragile we have become as a society. I have to think this is due, at least in part, to how little value is placed on truth. We can’t handle truth. Facing truth would mean acknowledgement of imperfection; it would mean we are not as self-sufficient as we believe ourselves to be; it would mean we need a higher power than ourselves on which to rely. All too quickly we find ourselves blurting out reckless words (e.g., reasons, excuses, causes, justifications, and the like). Yet in the long run this accomplishes nothing because it does not address the root problem.

We need our Lord and Savior each and every day. Overlook the insults and foolishness of the world and delve deeper into God’s Word daily. Choose and use your words wisely. In all things strive for honesty and truthfulness. Live a life that is trustworthy. This delights your Heavenly Father.

Ephesians 4:29, 32  Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. … Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Romans 12:18  If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Proverbs 17:27  The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered.

Psalm 141:3-4  Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips. Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil…

Gracious Heavenly Father,

In a time when folk are so easily offended and slighted, grant that our response is tempered by truth and love. In all things may we be found to be trustworthy people—a people in whom you can find delight.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
