God's Ultimate Plan

Job 42:3  You asked, “Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?” Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.

Job’s contrition was a direct result of realizing God’s wisdom and knowledge are far higher and greater than anything mortal man could imagine. God’s plan stretches from eternity to eternity and each human is a mere blip on the radar screen. Yet each tiny blip builds together to make the whole. We are not insignificant, we are useful and needed—but in the way God designs and not of our own planning. God made us and created us with a purpose. He gave us skills, abilities, jobs, and tasks to fulfill and each life brings the whole that much closer to God’s eternal Kingdom.

Here are just a few scriptures to remind us that God has a plan—has had a plan from the beginning—and will continue that plan until it is fulfilled. How amazing and humbling that God chooses to include us in His ultimate plan.

Who’s in control?

Isaiah 55:8-9  “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Psalm 33:11  But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.

Numbers 23:19  God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?

Jeremiah 10:23  LORD, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.

Proverbs 16:3-4  Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. The LORD works out everything to its proper end…

Proverbs 16:9 In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.

Matthew 5:18  For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

What is God’s ultimate plan?

Isaiah 45:18 For this is what the LORD says—he who created the heavens, he is God; he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited—he says: “I am the LORD, and there is no other.”

John 3:16-17  For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

2 Peter 3:8-9  But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

What part do we have in God’s ultimate plan?

Psalm 71:14, 18  As for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more. … Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.

Psalm 78:4, 6-7  We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done. … so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.

Gracious Heavenly Father,

All too often when our feeble plans go awry we are tempted to forget that you are ultimately in control, and that your plans far outweigh any ideas we could concoct on our own. Forgive us for failing to trust in you. Forgive us for not understanding your plan was to inhabit the earth with those who would choose to honor and obey you. Thank you for the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Remind us of the importance of sharing this wonderful gospel message with current generations so that they might in turn tell future generations. For ultimately your plan is that everyone would have the opportunity to choose You.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
