The Depths of Who We Are

Psalm 139:1-3  You have searched me, LORD, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.

Many good Christians believe in God yet have difficulty believing that he is in any way intimately involved with the mundane details of our lives. For them, God created the earth and all that is in it and now sits back and lets things happen as they may.

This is clearly not the picture we see from the Psalmist. From what I am able to understand, the term searched (v. 1) carries the meaning of an in-depth activity or to dig deeply. God is active and he digs deeply inside us and knows—has always known—who we are, what we think, what we do, and how we act. While we may schedule daily activities and make plans, or even spontaneously act upon any given circumstance; God is already keenly aware and knows our plans, the inner motivation for our plans, and how our actions will affect us and those around us. We are completely bare before God for he knows us full well.

Yet this is not the menacing knowing of “big brother is watching,” or “got-cha” waiting to happen. This is the deeply loving and caring sense of a Heavenly Father who looks after his children. This is a Psalm of praise to the LORD who knows all about us and still loves us. When we encounter those who claim they do not believe in God, we are able to lovingly respond, “Perhaps not, but He knows you, and He loves you.”

Gracious Heavenly Father,

How humbled we are that your love reaches to the depths of who we are, and yet knowing our failures and weaknesses, you still care enough to save us by your grace. May all that we think, say, and do be something that brings honor and glory to your name.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
