Thou Hast Beset Me

Psalm 139:5-6 (KJV)  Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

Psalm 139:5-6 (NIV)  You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

Beset – one of my new favorite words. I keep an old 1965 copy of Webster’s on my desk and sure enough, the definition for beset was included (p.71); to surround or hem in, especially from all sides.

As a teenager, I had only a rudimentary concept of God’s omnipresence and somehow envisioned that God could “visit” any time period he wished—past, present, future. It was some years later when I began to understand how significantly different God’s time is from our time. We are creatures with linear existence moving from moment to moment, hour to hour, day to day, year to year, etc. God transcends all time for he is omnipresent—present in all places at all times, simultaneously. He does not hop, skip, and jump between time periods—He IS.

God knows the generations that led up to the creation of us; he knows all the future generations that will proceed forth from us. The most wonderful and amazing news is that God’s hand of blessing is upon us, right here, right now, this very moment. We are beset (i.e., surrounded, hemmed in, fenced in, etc.) by God’s hand of mercy and love. God is not limited by time nor space; his hand of mercy and love will go before us, follow behind us, wrap around us from all sides, and stay upon us each moment of our linear lives.

(v. 6) Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

Gracious Heavenly Father,

How amazing is your hand of love and mercy upon us! It leaves us without words to adequately express our gratitude for your provision. All too often we plod along in our linear lives and forget to stop and recall your gracious hand of love, care, protection, and mercy placed upon us. Forgive our weaknesses and failures. Open our hearts so that we may recognize how you care for us each and every moment.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
