Job's Prayer

Job 42:1-6 (NIV)  1Then Job replied to the LORD: 2“I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted. 3You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.” 4“You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall answer me.’ My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.”

The book of Job fascinates me. For the bulk of its chapters (2:11 - 37:24) we have dialogue between Job and his friends—enough information to support volumes of devotionals! Then the LORD himself speaks to Job (38:1-41:34). The most amazing thing to me is that although the Bible is not in and of itself a Science textbook; in every case where science is mentioned, especially in this passage, the Bible is correct and accurate with reference to the science it describes. For both Job and I, this passage speaks of things I do not fully understand; things too wonderful for me to know.

And then we come to Job’s prayer. It is packed with lessons for us to learn and the next few devotionals will explore some of those lessons.  But for now dear Reader, I hope you will join me in preparation by taking time this weekend to read Job 38:1 - 41:34 as we catch a glimpse of our amazing Heavenly Father, Almighty God, Creator of all that is. Then if the Lord is willing, join me next week as we explore Job’s prayer together.

Gracious Heavenly Father,

Indeed you are vast and mighty, yet intricate and detailed, all in One Holy God. It is more than our feeble human minds can contain. We rest in your wisdom and depend on your care. Forgive us when we fall short of your desires and thank you for your mercy and grace.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
