One Day Closer

Colossians 3:1-4 (NIV) Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Easter season is a time of rejoicing! It is a time for remembering new life in Christ. It is a time for rejoicing in the blessed hope of resurrection to come.

And yet the reality of life is also recognizing the pain of death. Missing our dear friends and loved ones is often painful. Finding ways to navigate new routines without them, finding ways to fill the gaps in our aching heart—all of this is challenging to say the very least. And yet, we know that in time we will see them once again. Another devotional author whom I follow recently made the following statement:

“But as much as it hurts, every day of missing your dearest on earth has a bright side to it, because even though it is one day further from the last time you saw your loved one, it is one day closer to the next time you will.”

Gracious Heavenly Father,

When we experience loss, our hearts ache and memories are sometimes painful. Yet you have given us the most precious promise of life now in Christ and the blessed hope of resurrection to come, and we are one day closer. Thank you.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
