Where is Your Focus?

Matthew 6:33-34  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Such a familiar passage; scores of devotionals, sermons, lessons, and even songs have used this text. Unfortunately, all too often, the focus becomes the phrase …and all these things will be given to you as well… to promote the gospel of prosperity. Placing it in context, we see a real problem of basic needs being address—not “wants” but basic needs of life—food and clothing.

There are not many of us who struggle with basic needs. If we are honest, most of us struggle with “wants.” Perhaps it is time to thank God for his provisions. We may not have all we “want,” but we do have basic daily needs covered and for that we are to be thankful each day.

Truly, if what we seek first and foremost is God’s kingdom, and his righteousness, there will be little time left for stressing over the day’s concerns. Every day brings its own challenges; it is our choice to focus on those or focus on Christ. It has been said many times, we cannot always control our circumstances, but we can control our reactions to them.

Gracious Heavenly Father,

We are so thankful and so grateful for your provisions in our life. Forgive us when we focus on wants or circumstances instead of keeping our focus on you. We look forward to the blessed hope of your soon-coming Kingdom.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
