Quiet Contemplation - Day 10

James 5:7-8 (NIV)
Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.

It’s amazing to me how time-dependent we are as human beings. Most of us awake via some type of alarm system whether that is mechanical in nature, or a child, or for some—their pet. From that waking point until we retire to bed in the evening, we live from one moment of activity to the next. We require increments of time management (i.e., seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years) just to function.

2 Peter 3:8 (NIV)
But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.

It is my belief that God is an eternal being and has no time constrictions. All eternity past, present, and future belongs to him. Although we are quick to recognize that God is eternal; the “waiting for Christ’s return” part still seems to be a difficult concept for us to grasp. [See also 2 Peter 3:3-7] We are often tempted to substitute our own interpretation of “soon” instead of relying on God’s interpretation of “soon.” Then we wonder, “Why the delay?”

2 Peter 3:9-10 (NIV)
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. [e.g., unexpectedly]

Jesus Christ is coming soon! And perhaps the delay is in part to provide us with time to witness to others. Are we doing our job to hasten the return of Christ?

Gracious Heavenly Father,
We know you have promised to return soon. We know you keep your promises. Thank you for every moment you provide us with opportunities to witness for you. And when you return, may we be found faithful in your sight.
In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.

Respectfully written and submitted by
Dotty Willmon, Resurrection Christian—looking for the blessed hope of Christ’s return!
