A Good Response
Colossians 4:5-6
(NIV)
Be wise in the
way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your
conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how
to answer everyone.
This scripture is frequently used
for devotionals but perhaps that is because we need to hear it often. There is
actually quite a bit of information packed into this text. We begin by
recognizing that being wise is not meant as a free pass to be smart-alecky or
snarky with others. Of course, the intended meaning is to use sound judgement and have a sense of deep
understanding. In todays terms we might use the adage “think before you speak”
as a good guideline for communicating with others. Having said that, the second
portion of that verse tells us to make the most of every opportunity. The
smart-alecky or snarky person will indeed make the most of every opportunity to
spout something negative or cutting. The person of restraint will use each
opportunity to show good judgement and deep understanding.
The second verse in this text uses
the analogy of salt. The same caustic substance that stings and burns when it
comes in contact with an open sore is also used to preserve and protect from
spoilage. The smart-alecky or snarky person will use words to sting and burn. Our
goal should be to use our words to preserve and protect, and to do this always
in a manner full of grace. When you think about it, the phrase “salt of the
earth” indicates someone who is dependable and steadfast. The phrase “grain of
salt” often indicates use of common sense. And this, dear friends, brings us
full circle back to the beginning.
Our goal in good conversation and good
response to others—whether verbal or in texting—is to use sound judgment based upon
deep understanding, to preserve and protect in a manner consistent with grace,
and to be steadfast and dependable. There are plenty of smart-alecky and snarky
people out there ready to pounce on anyone with an opinion other than their
own. We are called to be a better example. And for the record, yes, this is one
of those devotionals I will be re-reading frequently! Feel free to join me and
together we will learn the grace of knowing how to answer others with a good
response.
