Fewest of All Peoples

Deuteronomy 7:6-8a  For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the LORD loved you…

Although this text is included in the writings of Moses and directed toward the early Israelite nation some 3,000+ years ago, I still believe it holds great merit for us today. Now, because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we as Christians are the chosen people of God. And it seems in today’s world that Christians are indeed the fewest of all peoples. Yet the message is clear. We are chosen because God loves us and sent his only Son to die for us and provide the means for our salvation. Our calling is simple: to remain His faithful people until the day of Christ’s return.

John 3:16-17  For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

2 Peter 3:9  The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Revelation 3:8b, 10-11  I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. … Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on this whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth. I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.

Gracious Heavenly Father,

We are so humbly thankful that in your great mercy and love you saved us. In a world so full of political turmoil, dishonesty, self-will, and conflict—those things that definitely test the inhabitants of the earth; teach us to remain faithful to you in all that we think, say, or do. Whether numbers of Christians are many or few, teach us to work with one another toward the goal of what will matter in your Kingdom.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
