Dear Readers,
Welcome to Week 3 of our 6-week slow stroll through the events leading up to the birth of Christ and the few days following. We will not cover every aspect of the Advent Story, but rather we will take time to read carefully and perhaps notice a few new things along the way. Our goal is deep thought, reflection, and introspection of our lives as a result of the wondrous birth of our Lord.
Each day we will look at only a few verses, or some days only a single verse. Notice the Who? What? Where? When? and How? that might apply to each passage. You might ask yourself why the text was important then? and why it is important now? My commentary will be noticeably brief; the goal, as noted above, is personal thought, reflection and introspection. Blessings to you as we journey through the Advent Season together.
Week 3/Day 1, Monday
Luke 2:1-2 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.)
We understand from history that two reasons were the root cause of holding census which occurred approximately every 14 years. One reason was military service, the other taxation. Since Jews were exempted from Roman military service, we understand this census was for the purpose of taxation. History also records edicts mandating a return to one’s home during census time, which we will explore tomorrow.
For today, what we see in this passage is another piece that helps us understand God’s planning and timing is beyond our comprehension. We all too often want to bend God’s timing to suit our own needs or to fit within our own schedules. God’s timing is perfect. Ours—not so much. Clearly our response should be one of complete trust for He knows how all the pieces of our life will fit together.
Prayer Suggestion: Thank God for his perfect timing in your life. Ask him to give you the strength and courage to completely trust Him.
