An Unnamed Heart of Dedication

Dear Readers,

Welcome to Week 2 of our 6-week slow stroll through the events leading up to the birth of Christ and the few days following. We will not cover every aspect of the Advent Story, but rather we will take time to read carefully and perhaps notice a few new things along the way. Our goal is deep thought, reflection, and introspection of our lives as a result of the wondrous birth of our Lord.

Each day we will look at only a few verses, or some days only a single verse. Notice the Who? What? Where? When? and How? that might apply to each passage. You might ask yourself why the text was important then? and why it is important now? My commentary will be noticeably brief; the goal, as noted above, is personal thought, reflection and introspection. Blessings to you as we journey through the Advent Season together.

Week 2/Day 3, Wednesday

Luke 1:26-28  In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Elizabeth –  Chosen by God to bear the one who would pave the way for Christ Jesus. Amazing things were happening in her life and amazing things would soon be happening in her cousin’s life as well.

Gabriel – Messenger of God, an angel. Not all messengers recorded in the Bible were named, but this one was. Chosen to bring the wonderful news to the mother of the coming Messiah.

Nazareth in Galilee – The place chosen to be the location from which great things would take place. The small town that was destined to be forever remembered.

Joseph – A simple carpenter by trade, yet here in this text noted as a descendant of David who was both King and servant of God.

One name is noticeably missing. She is the cousin of Elizabeth; she is greeted by Gabriel; she is pledged to Joseph; she is from Nazareth – all are important names…but her name is not present in this passage. Yet in this passage she is highly favored and the Lord is with her. Very soon and for generations to come people will know her name. But at this moment in time, the most important detail isn’t her name, but her heart of dedication to God.

Prayer Suggestion:  Thank God for loving you as you are. Dedicate your heart to him.
