Value and Great Worth

Dear Readers,

Welcome to Week 4 of our 6-week slow stroll through the events leading up to the birth of Christ and the few days following. We will not cover every aspect of the Advent Story, but rather we will take time to read carefully and perhaps notice a few new things along the way. Our goal is deep thought, reflection, and introspection of our lives as a result of the wondrous birth of our Lord.

Each day we will look at only a few verses, or some days only a single verse. Notice the Who? What? Where? When? and How? that might apply to each passage. You might ask yourself why the text was important then? and why it is important now? My commentary will be noticeably brief; the goal, as noted above, is personal thought, reflection and introspection. Blessings to you as we journey through the Advent Season together.

Week 4/Day 1, Monday

Luke 2:8  And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.

Nighttime. Cold and dark. Shepherds. A ragtag lowly bunch of men, perhaps huddling near a small campfire, perhaps not. Listening, watching for any sights or sounds of danger—wolves, bears, thieves. Constantly counting a head check on the flocks, making sure all were accounted for. Considered “undesirables” by the city folk. Excluded from the public, unwanted; in common public opinion shepherds lacked honor or value.

God had other plans for them. The story of the shepherds is one example of God’s righteousness. Keep in mind, according to Jewish culture, righteousness was a person of honor and value reaching down to those without honor or value and restoring them to a place of honor or value. We will see the story of the shepherds unfold as God will take these lowly undesirable shepherds and give them the honor of being first to hear the Good News of the Messiah’s birth.

Our lesson? Simply this. You are a person of value and great worth in God’s sight. God sees your heart. He knows you and loves you. God offers you righteousness.

Prayer Suggestion:  Offer a prayer of thanksgiving to God for knowing you from the inside and not just exterior appearances. Thank God for creating you to be a person of value and great worth. Thank God for his offer of righteousness.
