Simple Obedience

Dear Readers,

Welcome to Week 2 of our 6-week slow stroll through the events leading up to the birth of Christ and the few days following. We will not cover every aspect of the Advent Story, but rather we will take time to read carefully and perhaps notice a few new things along the way. Our goal is deep thought, reflection, and introspection of our lives as a result of the wondrous birth of our Lord.

Each day we will look at only a few verses, or some days only a single verse. Notice the Who? What? Where? When? and How? that might apply to each passage. You might ask yourself why the text was important then? and why it is important now? My commentary will be noticeably brief; the goal, as noted above, is personal thought, reflection and introspection. Blessings to you as we journey through the Advent Season together.

Week 2/Day 2, Tuesday

Luke 1:59-60  On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”

According to The Daily Study Bible Series (Barclay, W., 1975); the name John is an abbreviated form of Jehohanan and carries the meaning of being a gift from God or a reflection of the graciousness of God. Truly the child John was an unexpected gift whose name would reflect that joy. Furthermore, how amazing to understand that this name was assigned by God and given through the instruction of his angel to the parents. The parents obeyed and called their son John. Simple obedience and following through on what they knew was God’s will.

That is our lesson today. Simple obedience and following through on what we know God is calling us to do. What have you started and what do you need to complete? How will you obey and how will you follow through?

I have recently been reminded of the following mantra, which was written and practiced by John Wesley:

“Do all the good you can.  --  By all the means you can.  --  In all the ways you can.  --  In all the places you can.  --  At all the times you can.  --  To all the people you can.  --  As long as ever you can.”

Prayer Suggestion:  Ask God to guide you in completing the tasks he has for you. Ask God for opportunities to serve him.
