Dear Readers,
Welcome to Week 4 of our 6-week slow stroll through the events leading up to the birth of Christ and the few days following. We will not cover every aspect of the Advent Story, but rather we will take time to read carefully and perhaps notice a few new things along the way. Our goal is deep thought, reflection, and introspection of our lives as a result of the wondrous birth of our Lord.
Each day we will look at only a few verses, or some days only a single verse. Notice the Who? What? Where? When? and How? that might apply to each passage. You might ask yourself why the text was important then? and why it is important now? My commentary will be noticeably brief; the goal, as noted above, is personal thought, reflection and introspection. Blessings to you as we journey through the Advent Season together.
Week 4/Day 4, Thursday
Luke 2:13-14 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
According to traditions of the day, the birth of a son would be a time of great celebration. Family, friends, musicians would gather around the home with songs of jubilation. But for the birth of Jesus? Mary and Joseph were miles away from home surrounded by a sea of strangers. There was no one to share their joy except a few bellowing braying animals.
Yet the Lord provided the celebration. Shepherds nearby were witnesses to the glorious sounds of praise coming from a host of heavenly messengers. Glory to God in the highest heaven! Not only this, but on earth peace and good will toward men.
Prayer Suggestion: No matter in what circumstances you may find yourself, no matter how lonely you might feel; take time to thank God that He is your source of rejoicing. Glory to God in the highest heaven! Thank God for bringing peace to your heart.
