Zechariah and Elizabeth

Dear Readers,

For the next six weeks we will embark on a slow stroll through the events leading up to the birth of Christ and the few days following. We will not cover every aspect of the Advent Story, but rather we will take time to read carefully and perhaps notice a few new things along the way. Our goal is deep thought, reflection, and introspection of our lives as a result of the wondrous birth of our Lord.

Each day we will look at only a few verses, or some days only a single verse. Notice the Who? What? Where? When? and How? that might apply to each passage. You might ask yourself why the text was important then? and why it is important now? My commentary will be noticeably brief; the goal, as noted above, is personal thought, reflection and introspection. Blessings to you as we journey through the Advent Season together.

Luke 1:5-7  In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. but they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.

Zechariah and Elizabeth were both descendants of Aaron, the Priestly line. For both husband and wife to be of directly lineage was something of meritorious honor. Zechariah and Elizabeth were found righteous in God’s sight. They were both very old, yet the longevity that should have brought immense joy brought reminders of their childlessness.

The righteous are not immune from hardships. But as we follow the story and see the ways God remained faithful and in control during the days of Zechariah and Elizabeth, we will gain a better understanding that God is still in control today.

Prayer Suggestion:  Thank God for his presence in your life.
