Perfectly Flawless

Write From My Heart / January 12, 2021 / Perfectly Flawless

2 Samuel 22:31-33 (NIV) As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him. For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.

When comparing various translations of a single Bible verse or passage, it is often interesting to notice the slightest change in wording can create a vast difference in meaning and intent of the passage. For example, I have a dear friend who pointed out that difference in one of her favorite passages, Proverbs 3:5-6. She explained to me that God does not promise to always straighten out the kinks and twists and turns in our path or “make your paths straight” (NIV); however, he does promise to “direct thy paths” (KJV), and “he will show you which path to take” (NLT) when you trust him. I have always appreciated my friend for sharing this because it helps me use caution when I study scripture. My heart tells me in today’s verses we have a similar occurrence with one word that has multiple meanings.

The passage begins by reassuring us that God’s way is perfect. In fact, the word is further defined as flawless. There is no question or doubt that God’s way is the only right and true way. It is perfect; it is flawless. We can depend on God’s way to lead us and guide us. I love the additional attributes of God described in this passage. He is our God, but he is also our LORD, a very personal LORD. He is the Rock who gives us stability in the midst of the storms of life. He gives us strength each day to meet the challenges ahead.

He makes [my/your/our] way perfect. Ah, there it is! Notice what is missing between our way and God’s way? (flawless) We are living in an inherently corrupt and flawed world. God does not promise to make our way flawless. However, God does make our way perfect in the sense of “lacking no essential detail” and “satisfying all requirements.” God is the wonderful Provider of everything we need. Truly, our way is perfect and we lack nothing. In addition, when we choose a way in life that “corresponds to [God’s] ideal standards” and “faithfully reproduces the original,” those are also indications of making our path perfect. It is God who provides daily strength that helps us follow his standards. It is God who satisfies all we need. It is God who makes our way perfect. And one day, when Christ returns, it is God who will welcome us into his Kingdom and only then will our way become perfectly flawless.

Gracious Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the provision of daily strength. Thank you for the promise of guidance when we trust in you. Thank you for satisfying our needs for only you know what is best. Forgive us when we stray and guide us safely back to you.

In the name of Christ Jesus our Savior and Lord, Amen.
