The Meaning of Life

Ecclesiastes 1:2 (cf., 12:8)  “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless!”

The book of Ecclesiastes is one of the most unique books among the poetry writings included in the Old Testament. The author is unknown although most scholars attribute the writing to King Solomon who was granted profound wisdom by God (see, 2 Chronicles 1:7-12). If this is true, King Solomon does not give his name, but only refers to himself as Teacher [KJV, preacher]. The bulk of the writing sandwiched in between verses 1:2 and 12:8 discusses the meaning of life, that life is not always fair, the topic of wisdom, and that no one can know the future. In many ways it addresses the pessimism and cynicism we so often find in life.

Our first response might be, Well, if it’s all meaningless, why bother? What does it matter what I do here on earth if nothing matters? Dear friend, it all has to do with the last six verses with emphasis on the final two verses.

Ecclesiastes 12:9-14 (NIV)  9Not only was the Teacher  wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs. 10The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true. 11The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails—given by one shepherd. 12Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them. Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body. 13Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. 14For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.

The reason we look for things that are meaningful; the reason we persevere when life is not fair; the reason we search for truth in wisdom; the reason we cling to the promised future of Blessed Hope is because we serve a loving and just God. He will never leave us nor forsake us. He will not abandon us when times are hard. Our only duty and responsibility is to fear God and keep his commandments in good times and not-so-good times. God gives meaning to life.

Gracious Heavenly Father,

Forgive us when we get bogged down in the pessimism and cynicism in life. Show us that you have created each of us with purpose and meaning. Humble our hearts with respect, awe, and reverence for you. Grant us a new attitude of willingness to serve you.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
