Wounded For Me

Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

            The Gospel message is one of tragedy turned to triumph. The very thought that God’s only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, would leave his throne to come to earth in human form, suffer unspeakable torment, be nailed to a crudely hewn cross, there left to die—all the while carrying the weight of our sins on his shoulders speaks of unimaginable pain and suffering. Christ did that for me—Christ did that for you!

            Yet the tragedy of Christ’s suffering and death would soon turn to glorious triumph.

1 Peter 1:18-21  For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

            Today’s hymn comes from Advent Christian Hymnal, ACGC Publishers, 1967. The words were penned by two authors: W.G. Owens (st. 1) and Gladys W. Roberts (sts. 2-5). Collectively they tell the wonderful Gospel message.

Wounded For Me (#162)

Wounded for me, wounded for me, There on the cross He was wounded for me;

            Gone my  transgressions, and now I am free, All because Jesus was wounded for me.

Dying for me, dying for me, There on the cross He was dying for me;

            Now in his death my redemption I see, All because Jesus was dying for me.

Risen for me, risen for me, Up from the grave He has risen for me;

            Now evermore from death’s sting I am free, All because Jesus has risen for me.

Living for me, living for me, Up in the skies He is living for me;

            Daily he’s pleading and praying for me, All because Jesus is living for me.

Coming for me, coming for me, One day to earth He is coming for me;

            Then with what joy his dear face I shall see, Oh, how I praise Him! He’s coming for me.

 Gracious Heavenly Father,

            We come before you today to humble our hearts with thankful gratitude for the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Forgive our sins and wayward thoughts. Create in us a clean heart. Thank you for the promise of eternal life and the promise of Christ’s return.

            In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
