Quiet Contemplation - Day 42

Ezekiel 11:19-20 (NLT)
And I will give them singleness of heart and put a new spirit within them. I will take away their stony, stubborn heart and give them a tender, responsive heart, so they will obey my decrees and regulations. Then they will truly be my people, and I will be their God.

Singleness of heart—unity—something our nation is sorely lacking at this time. We recognize the fragmentation of family units, communities, political groups and such. But I think we find a word of encouragement in today’s passage.
When we remain steadfast in putting God first in all things, we see change taking place that starts from within. With the Lord’s guidance and his spirit within us, we lose those things that hinder us from serving him. Some of the hesitations and reservations in our heart begin to melt. In its place we find a tender responsive heart ready to reach out to others in need. As we begin to reach out, others may notice and gain the courage to join us in starting a chain reaction of kindness. In those moments we begin to understand what it means to be a people of God. And a people of God with singleness of heart can change a fragmented nation.

Gracious Heavenly Father,
Too often we doubt how we can be of service to you. Guide us in understanding that the change taking place in our own heart can make a difference in the lives of those with whom we have daily interactions. As we join with others to truly be people of God—your people—let us lead the way for changing the heart of our nation.
In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
