Audits & Resolutions - Day 31

Write From My Heart / December 31, 2020 / Audits & Resolutions – Day 31

Question: What are my expectations for the future?

both Matthew 24:30 and Mark 13:26 (NIV) They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory.

Philippians 3:20-21 (NLT) But we are citizens of heaven where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control.

Titus 2:12-13 (NIV) …live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ…

Isaiah 65:17 (NIV) Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.

2 Peter 3:13 (NIV) But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.

For hundreds of years successive generations have looked forward with eager expectation to the promised return—the Blessed Hope—of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Although many have tried, we are strongly cautioned in God’s Word that setting a time is futile because God alone knows when he will give the command for Christ to come.

Matthew 24:36, 42 (NIV) No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. … Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.

We are also strongly cautioned to remain steadfast even when the world ridicules us. We must remember that when God makes a promise, he will always keep his word.

2 Peter 3:3-7 (NIV) First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and with water. By water also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. [ref. days of Noah] by the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

If you are reading this 31-day devotional series in the month of December, then you are not only concluding the mini-series but you are concluding the year. Ironically enough, Christ could come before I conclude writing this page, or before you conclude reading it. That is the anticipation we should hold. My heart tells me that it is a strong possibility. Yet if it should not be, what then? What if we awaken tomorrow as usual? Are we to question the delay? The Bible actually gives us the answer to that question as well.

2 Peter 3:9, 13 (NIV) The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. … Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.

Personally, my future expectations are two-fold. My heart tells me things will get much worse before they get better. My heart tells me one of the most insidious tools Satan will use is to cause great fear among Christians through separation and isolation—and we see that happening in all too many countries, our own nation, and local states. If the adversary can prevent Christians from understanding just how many followers of Christ are expectantly awaiting their Savior; if the adversary can cause Christians to feel alone in the battle for truth; then the possibility for Christians to lose hope is increased. We must not allow that to happen. We must use every means at our disposal (i.e., phone, text, letters, cards, email, social media, church) to reach out to one another, to support one another, and to encourage one another.

Hebrews 10:23-25 (NIV) Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

My second expectation for the future is a glorious one. It is the expectation that builds the foundation for everything my heart tells me to write. Jesus Christ is coming soon!

Revelation 21:3-4 (NIV) Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.

Revelation 22:3-5 (NIV) No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of the lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.

Resolution now and for the remainder of time: Live as if Christ may come at any moment!

Gracious Heavenly Father,

In your love and mercy you promise that soon Christ will come to redeem his own. In the meantime, we understand your delay provides time for others to come to salvation. We also understand that puts a responsibility on us to spread the Gospel message in every opportunity and in so doing we can hasten your arrival.  Dear Lord, you know and understand our fear of feeling alone to face the end of all things—but we are not alone. Not only are you with us, but you have kept us among many thousands or even millions of faithful ones—if we simply pay attention to those around us. Teach us to support, encourage, and reach out to others and even more so as the days grow more unsettling and drear. Keep us always in eager anticipation and expectation of the Blessed Hope of your return!

In the name of Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior, Amen.

Audits & Resolutions - Day 30

Write From My Heart / December 30, 2020 / Audits & Resolutions – Day 30

Question: Do others see Christ through me?

Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV) You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV) But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.

Philemon v. 6 (NIV) I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.

One might think a person whose career was public school teaching to be quite comfortable striking up a conversation with others. It might surprise many of you to know that I am far more comfortable expressing my thoughts through writing than speaking. For one thing, spoken words are nearly impossible to edit or retract, at least not without lingering consequences. Those who know me can remember times I have taught Sunday School (both for children’s classes and for adults), taught at various women’s retreats, even occasionally spoken from the pulpit to fill in on a very few special occasions, countless children’s sermons, taught college courses, and I have also spoken at teacher’s meetings, workshops, and conferences. However all those occasions usually followed a written script or plan and were well-practiced prior to presentation. The very thought of speaking impromptu can produce a fair amount of anxiety.

Those who choose to follow Christ have been given a great light of hope. It is our responsibility and our duty to share that light with others. For me, it doesn’t mean I need to go knocking door-to-door, but it means I need to be familiar enough with the plan of salvation and what it means that I could share it effectively (e.g., without tripping over my words) with another person without hesitation. I need to know my scriptures and know them well enough to be able to share (including the reference) with any person who engages in conversation with me about why I am a Christian. For me, it means I need to place my fear of impromptu speaking in a public setting into God’s hands and trust him to give me the clarity of thought and speech needed.

A great place to start:

Romans 3:23 (NIV) For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Romans 6:23 (NIV) For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

John 3:16-17 (NIV) For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him hall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Romans 10:9-10,13 (NIV) That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.  … for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Resolution: Be active in sharing my faith with others.

Gracious Heavenly Father,

By your mercy, love, and grace I am saved. You have given me a great gift and light through your Son. Quench the fears of public speaking and grant clarity of thought and speech to share this gift of Light with others.

In the name of Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior, Amen.

Audits & Resolutions - Day 29

Write From My Heart / December 29, 2020 / Audits & Resolutions – Day 29

Question: Does my family understand why my faith in God is important to me?

Psalm 71:18 (NIV) Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come.

Psalm 78:1-7 (NIV) O my people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden from of old—things we have heard and known, things our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done. He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.

Proverbs 22:6 (NIV) Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.

Perhaps one of the most heartbreaking things for a Christian parent is to see a child make choices that lead them further away from Christ instead of toward Christ. In that situation the only thing one can do is faithfully continue in prayer. God does not desire to raise up a people of robots who worship him out of some mandated duty, so ultimately it is the responsibility of each individual person to make his/her own voluntary decision to accept Christ as their Savior and worship the Lord God from a willing heart.

Perhaps we think since our children grew up going to church with us or hearing a parent teach/preach then they automatically know where we stand in our faith. That may be a valid point but my heart tells me it goes deeper. My heart tells me it isn’t just about showing or telling them what we believe—it’s about telling them why we believe it and why it is important to us. That kind of conversation may be much harder but greatly needed. As with many devotions, I’m not just writing this for you but for myself as well. I know my boys know what I believe and have since they were little guys. But I wonder if I have ever sufficiently conveyed to them why it is so important to me. Perhaps this is a goal we might all strive for in the coming year.

Resolution: Share my faith with my family, both the what and the why.

Gracious Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the gift of future generations whether children, nieces and nephews, or young cousins. May we boldly share not only the Good News of life in Christ, but the importance it holds for future joy of life in your eternal Kingdom.

In the name of Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior, Amen.
