1 John 3:18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
1 Peter 4:10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
Veterans Day began 1918 on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month as an armistice (i.e., temporary cessation of hostilities) during World War I. Since then, the United States has honored American veterans of all branches for their service in all wars. Today we pause to thank all brave men and women who protect our freedoms and keep us safe.
Switching topics from patriotism to Christianity, we find so many scriptures that remind all Christians of the importance of service to others. Not merely lip service, but service with love expressed through actions and through the use of whatever gifts and abilities the Lord has given to us. Christians have a responsibility to be faithful servants. The Pastor of our local church often reminds us that we are the “hands and feet” of Jesus here on earth. Take time today to consider the ways you might put your love into active service.
Gracious Heavenly Father,
We thank you for raising up strong men and women who serve in our military. We thank you for each one and we pray for their safety, strength, and courage. We recognize that the topic of service is not only for military, but also for each one who professes faith in you. We, too, are called to serve in a wide variety of means according to the abilities you have given each of us—the service of loving and helping others. May we be found faithful.
In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
