How Firm Is Your Foundation?

Isaiah 43:1-3  But now, this is what the LORD says—he who created you… he who formed you… “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…

Each life is met with various challenges, struggles, and difficulties. Some endure more than others. Yet there is one commonality. Those whose lives are built on the foundation of Jesus Christ are able to persevere in the worst of times. We have a hope and a future that the world does not understand. We have a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. The question we must ponder is this:

How firm is your foundation?

I am reminded of a classic hymn, most often attributed to George Keith, found in Ribbon’s Selection of Hymns, 1787, entitled “How Firm a Foundation.”

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in His excellent Word! What more can He say than to you He hath said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

Fear not, I am with thee; O be not dismayed, for I am thy God, and will still give thee aid; I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.

When through the deep waters I call thee to go, the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow; For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless, and sanctify to thee they deepest distress.

When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, My grace, all sufficient, shall by thy supply; The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine.

The soul that on Jesus still leans for repose, I will not, I will not desert to its foes; That soul, though all terror endeavors to shake, I’ll never, no never, no never forsake!

1 Corinthians 3:11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Gracious Heavenly Father,

Forgive our wavering hearts and keep us solidly on your firm foundation.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
