Every once in a while I pause in my daily devotions to simply review some of my favorite scripture verses. In fact, I did that this morning and I’d like to share them with you. Here are just a few of my favorites:
Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Galatians 6:9-10 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
Ephesians 4:32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Ephesians 5:15-17 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil.
You cannot control the thoughts and attitudes of others. How they treat you is on their shoulders. But you most certainly can control your own thoughts and attitudes. How you respond to others is on your shoulders. Part of belonging to the Family of God means that we voluntarily hold ourselves to a higher standard of compassion and kindness for others. It means voluntarily making the most of opportunities to forgive and love the unloving. It means voluntarily choosing positive attitudes over negative ones—not easy in today’s world, yet it is our goal if we call ourselves Christians. The past is in the past…let it stay there. Choose to make this day a fresh start.
Gracious Heavenly Father,
We miss the mark of true Christian (i.e., Christ-like) character in so many ways. Forgive us, we pray. You graciously provide us with so many opportunities to be an example of Life in Christ to a world who is so desperately in need of less evil and more love and compassion—a world that needs you. Guide us by your Spirit to take notice of opportunities and to follow through.
