Do Often

Deuteronomy 6:6-7  These words I am commanding you today must be kept in mind, and you must teach them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road, as you lie down, and as you get up.

This morning as we wrap up our mini-series, we find our little two-letter verb do functioning with an adverb indicating frequency. How many times? Many times; frequently; with continuation; often.

Our passage from Deuteronomy is given in reference to what we commonly refer to as The Ten Commandments (cf. Exodus 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21). Many folk will say, “Well, that was the ‘Old’ Testament and not relevant today.” Interestingly all ten of the “Old” Testament commands will fit neatly within the two given by Christ in the “New” Testament.

Matthew 22:34-40  Now when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they assembled together. And one of them, an expert in religious law, asked him a question to test him: “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?”  Jesus said to him, “ ‘Love the Lord your God will all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

Once again, we are left without excuse. Now here comes the hard-hitting part; I would imagine very few people keep all Ten Commandments in their mind continually, teaching them daily to younger children, speaking of them while doing daily tasks,  engaging in conversation when walking or working or doing errands around town, sharing with their families before bedtime and when rising each day. Most of us, especially those of us with many accumulated birthdays, have trouble reciting all ten, let alone engaging in discussion. However Christ simplified all ten into two commands Love God and Love your neighbor. I’m not sure how often we even manage this much. I’m not sure one hour, or even two, each Sunday morning is enough to qualify as often given the pattern of frequency described in Deuteronomy 6:6-7.  It does give us pause to think.

Today’s Prayer Suggestion:   Thank your Heavenly Father for the two simple commandments He asks us to keep central in our Christian walk with Him. Ask forgiveness for times when you have fallen short or missed the mark. Begin today to build a better consistency of doing often.
