Dear Readers,
Welcome to Week 5 of our 6-week slow stroll through the events leading up to the birth of Christ and the few days following. We will not cover every aspect of the Advent Story, but rather we will take time to read carefully and perhaps notice a few new things along the way. Our goal is deep thought, reflection, and introspection of our lives as a result of the wondrous birth of our Lord.
Each day we will look at only a few verses, or some days only a single verse. Notice the Who? What? Where? When? and How? that might apply to each passage. You might ask yourself why the text was important then? and why it is important now? My commentary will be noticeably brief; the goal, as noted above, is personal thought, reflection and introspection. Blessings to you as we journey through the Advent Season together.
Week 5/Day 5, Friday
Luke 2:23-24 …(as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”), and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”
A pair of doves or two young pigeons—known as The Offering of the Poor. It is yet one more reminder that God does not measure wealth by external accumulations but to God, wealth is measured by what is stored up in your heart. Jesus did not grow up in a wealthy home by external measures, but the internal measures of wealth Jesus offers is the gift of eternity in God’s kingdom. It is the gift of love beyond measure. It cannot be purchased or earned, it is a free gift to those who accept Jesus as their Savior.
Prayer Suggestion: Offer thanks and gratitude to God for measuring your wealth not by the world’s standards but by your heart of love for him.
