Very Old is Never Too Old

Dear Readers,

Welcome to Week 6, the final week  of our 6-week slow stroll through the events leading up to the birth of Christ and the few days following. We will not cover every aspect of the Advent Story, but rather we will take time to read carefully and perhaps notice a few new things along the way. Our goal is deep thought, reflection, and introspection of our lives as a result of the wondrous birth of our Lord.

Each day we will look at only a few verses, or some days only a single verse. Notice the Who? What? Where? When? and How? that might apply to each passage. You might ask yourself why the text was important then? and why it is important now? My commentary will be noticeably brief; the goal, as noted above, is personal thought, reflection and introspection. Blessings to you as we journey through the Advent Season together.

Week 6/Day 3, Wednesday

Luke 2:36-38  There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

Young Anna became a widow after only seven years of marriage. Now here she was having been a widow until she was eighty-four still attending the temple faithfully. She was faithful in worship, faithful in fasting, faithful in prayer. Now her faithfulness would be rewarded by the sight of the promised Messiah. Yet her story does not end here; she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. Anna continued to be faithful in service to God. Age never became an excuse for Anna. Our lesson is simple; being very old is never too old to be useful in service to God.

Prayer Suggestion:  Thank God for the years of life with which he has blessed you. Be faithful in service, be faithful in worship, and be faithful in prayer.
