Words of Comfort

Dear Readers:

In the past I have quoted scripture from the New International Version (NIV) and from the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible. This year, I will be trying out something new and will use the New English Translation (NET) version of the Bible as a standard for Write From My Heart devotionals. Once again, all scripture texts quoted will be NET unless otherwise noted. It is my hope that NET will provide the modern language preferred by most folk while still maintaining the true intent of scriptural interpretation from the original text.  It is important to me not to rely on popular paraphrases available today, but rather to maintain the integrity of scriptures through the use of  authorized translations. Thank you for your continued readership support.

This notice will be posted for the entire first week of transition from NIV to NET.

Job 16:1-5  Then Job replied: 2 “I have heard many things like these before. What miserable comforters are you all! 3Will there be an end to your windy words? Or what provokes you that you answer? 4I also could speak like you, if you were in my place; I could pile up words against you and I could shake my head at you. 5But I would strengthen you with my words; comfort from my lips would bring you relief.”

At a time when Job most needed the comfort and encouragement of his friends, what he received instead was their self-proclaimed wisdom and analysis of the situation. He did not need empty words. He needed encouragement. He knew that had the roles been reversed, his words would speak comfort and relief to them.

Often, when others are in a moment of crises, we have difficulty finding words to express our compassion or ways to offer encouragement. Apostle Paul and the psalmist Asaph offer these responses:

2 Corinthians 1:3-4  3Blessed is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4who comforts us in all our troubles so that we may be able to comfort those experiencing any trouble with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

Psalm 73:26  My flesh and my heart may grow weak, but God always protects my heart and gives me stability.

Today’s Prayer Suggestion:  Offer a prayer of thanksgiving for God’s comfort during the times you most needed it. Pray for those whom you know are experiencing great trauma, hardships, or suffering. Ask your Heavenly Father for appropriate words and appropriate times to offer those words.
