Dear Readers,
Welcome to Week 6, the final week of our 6-week slow stroll through the events leading up to the birth of Christ and the few days following. We will not cover every aspect of the Advent Story, but rather we will take time to read carefully and perhaps notice a few new things along the way. Our goal is deep thought, reflection, and introspection of our lives as a result of the wondrous birth of our Lord.
Each day we will look at only a few verses, or some days only a single verse. Notice the Who? What? Where? When? and How? that might apply to each passage. You might ask yourself why the text was important then? and why it is important now? My commentary will be noticeably brief; the goal, as noted above, is personal thought, reflection and introspection. Blessings to you as we journey through the Advent Season together.
Week 6/Day 1, Monday
Luke 2:28-32 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.” [cf. v26: It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.]
Children promise to clean their rooms. Teens promise to put schoolwork first and to be home at a certain time. Adults promise to keep appointments and meetings. Advertisements, commercials, even ads for medicines promise miraculous results. In our society promises seem to carry little weight or value.
God keeps his promises!
Ecclesiastes 5:2, 4-5 Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few. … When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow. It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.
Perhaps we all have much to learn.
Prayer Suggestion: Ask God to forgive you for any false promises you have made, and ask for wisdom to use your words carefully, then for wisdom to keep the promises you make in the future.
