The Thoughts of Many Hearts

Dear Readers,

Welcome to Week 6, the final week  of our 6-week slow stroll through the events leading up to the birth of Christ and the few days following. We will not cover every aspect of the Advent Story, but rather we will take time to read carefully and perhaps notice a few new things along the way. Our goal is deep thought, reflection, and introspection of our lives as a result of the wondrous birth of our Lord.

Each day we will look at only a few verses, or some days only a single verse. Notice the Who? What? Where? When? and How? that might apply to each passage. You might ask yourself why the text was important then? and why it is important now? My commentary will be noticeably brief; the goal, as noted above, is personal thought, reflection and introspection. Blessings to you as we journey through the Advent Season together.

Week 6/Day 2, Tuesday

Luke 2:33-35  The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

The thoughts of many hearts would be revealed through the life of Jesus and Mary’s heart would be no exception. John writes about a wedding feast that ran out of wine for the guests. Mary knew her son had powers beyond that of a normal man and she took matters into her own hands because in her mind it was her son who could solve the problem, (cf., John 2:1-11). Mark writes of a time Jesus’ own family thought he was out of his mind, (cf., Mark 3:20-21). At the foot of the cross Mary’s heart was pierce with grief yet even in his final moments Jesus took care of his mother, (cf., John 19:26-27).

Prayer Suggestion:  God knows our hearts better than we do. He knows the motives behind each thought. Come to him in honesty and humbleness, thanking him for his great love for you.
